IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim received a lot of e-mails from maritime companies, unions associations, seafarers and expressed his appreciation to all seamen, who have remained on board during COVID-19 pandemic. He is concerned about the fate of global seafarers faced the challenge of 2020 and so far cannot return to their families.
The Secretary-General stated in his personal massage, that IMO have been in urgent contact with trade unions, seafarer welfare organizations, shipowners, governments, etc. to find solutions.
‘I have written to all our Member States, urging them to recognize all seafarers as “key workers”, remove any barriers to your documentation and lift national travel restrictions so that you can get home on conclusion of your contracts, and rejoin your families.’ He said.
Previously it was reported that the IMO head office is working in the remote mode, the Secretary-General assured, that all members of his team are engaged in helping seafarers. Summarizing he wished global seamen to stay strong in order to overcome the crisis.
‘To all seafarers, my message to you is strong and clear: We are listening. We hear you.’
